In India you have many beautiful places to stay. Of course there are simply expensive (and boring) hotels, but there are also many hotels located in old palaces. Luxury in a historic setting. Often with very refined service and equipped with all modernities. And very expensive. Outside the standard tourist route, however, you can still find gems of places to stay, or rather rough diamonds, places with a historic grandeur, but not or hardly modernized, so actually much purer than slick five star palaces. And in a completely different price range.

For example in Mehansar, a village in Shekawati, a region in Rajasthan, between Delhi and Jaipur. The village is dominated by a huge fortress. And in that fort is the eighteenth-century Narayan Niwas Castle, owned by the eighth Thakur of Mehansar. There are fourteen rooms in the castle that are all different. Tower rooms, rooms with a large veranda, high rooms and traditionally decorated rooms. But the best thing is the suite. I recently spent five days there and enjoyed my temporary home every day. A place to unwind. Or, as the driver who dropped me off said: you can live here for a month and write a book. You can choose a taxi for rajasthan tour from best tour operator in udaipur.

The suite has a private courtyard, a large sitting room with another twenty square meters of seats against the outside, a slightly smaller dining room with table and chairs and again small seats and a spacious bedroom. And everything is originally decorated and equipped with authentic furniture. Cost of this palace: around thirty euros a day. And for less than four euros you will also be provided with a delicious traditional Indian meal.

Practical information:

Mehansar is located in the Shekawati region, a part of Rajasthan, twenty kilometers from Churu, which lies on the Delhi-Bikaner railway line. About three hours from Bikaner and five hours from Delhi. There are at least six trains a day, half of them at reasonable times. If you book, the owner of the castle can arrange transportation from Churu.

In the village of Mehansar there is one of the most beautifully painted houses in the region and a beautiful temple. In addition, it is a nice tranquil desert village. Desert trips and visits to other places in the region can also be arranged.

Subsequent transport to, for example, Nawalgarh can also be arranged with stops in tourist places such as Mandawa and Dunlodh.
